Rate conversion questions: carry the rate across hours

To carry a rate from minutes to hours, work out how many times it repeats in one hour, then multiply by the hours you are asked about. After you submit, each one shows the working and names the wrong turn behind every other option.

A filling line completes 300 bottles every 20 minutes. Running at the same rate, how many bottles does it complete in 6 hours?

Check your answer
  1. An hour has 60 minutes and one batch takes 20, so the line completes 60 ÷ 20 = 3 batches an hour.
  2. Each batch is 300 bottles, so one hour's output is 300 × 3 = 900 bottles.
  3. Carry that hourly output across all 6 hours of the shift, 900 × 6 = 5,400 bottles.

Answer: 5,400 bottles. Testonome practice pace: 55 seconds for a question like this.

Four ways this question type goes wrong

Each question offers four wrong answers beside the right one, drawn from a longer list of mistakes. These four are among them, and the review names the one you took.

  • One hour only

Stopping at the hourly output, so the rate is converted once and never carried across the whole shift.

  • One batch too many

Counting the batch under way when the shift starts as well as every completed one, so the line is credited with one batch too many.

  • Conversion never done

Multiplying the batch by the hours without converting, so the fill interval never enters the working.

  • Factor upside down

Dividing by the batches an hour instead of multiplying by them, so the conversion factor works against the answer.

What the review gives you after you submit

You get the working for every question, the answer you chose beside the right one, and the reason the option you picked is wrong. Nothing is sent anywhere while you work.
